Remote control helicopters and planes are one of the
biggest segments of the radio control hobby community. This is one of the
oldest areas too, originally starting as build-it-yourself kits requiring a high
degree of mechanical skill to
build and maintain - not to mention fly.
Fortunately most of the
RC helicopters and planes on
today's market are RTR (ready to run) straight from the box. Just like
their cousins RC Trucks and cars, they're available in both electric and gas
models.
With ranges of 400' and longer, you can take flight
with control and distance. The thrill of controlling a helicopter or fixed
wing aircraft like a model propeller or imitation jumbo jet is hard to beat.
Skill levels can be steep however - helicopters in particular are a little
difficult at first to master takeoff and controlled landings, while faster
moving planes are also a bit of a challenge to keep together during landings -
especially if you have a lot of tree's or an uneven surface to land on.
One of the most
enjoyable - but demanding of all RC vehicles. This is a demanding hobby to
learn - learning the controls including a pitch gauge and how to hover are key
to mastering a choppers delicate controls. Most helicopters are gas
powered for the necessary range and power needed.
RC Planes
Fast moving and
gliding, remote control planes are a fun and fast way to take to the air.
Most popular in this category are the Cessna looking single propeller planes -
they're fast, relatively inexpensive, and easier to control than some of the
larger models and specialty looking jets.

Blimps
They're not fast,
but they are the easiest to control and one of the most eye catching to run.
Inexpensive and featuring decent range, you can easily control an RC blimp
indoor or outside if its very calm. These are available for as little as
about $70 - requiring a helium fill and battery charge. |
